Rob's Notes
The thing that stood out to me when I tasted this wine is the absence of the oaky-ness, typical to high-caliber Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. As you see below in the winery notes, the wine is aged in large, neutral casks that will not slather the purity of the wines personality with something foreign. There is a striking balance of fruit and savory notes, very atypical of Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. Dare to be different - It really works well for the Heitz C-91!
From the Heitz Website
As advertised, this wine is a balance of fruit and savory, reminiscent of a Bordeaux with round edges. I would be happy on any evening if a friend offered this up in place of many classified Bordeaux.
The origin of Lot C-91 begins in the fall of 1969 with the idea that through meticulous site selection and assemblage, we can create something more significant than the sum of its parts. This historical cuvée is sourced exclusively from the renowned single vineyards of Heitz Cellar and showcases a most unique expression of the terroir of the Napa Valley.
Aged for nine months in large neutral casks and a combination of new and used French oak, the 2016 Lot C-91 exhibits the density and length of which only the truly great wines of the world are able to achieve. The presence of savory elements such as sage, rosemary, cured meats, and black pepper distinguishes this cuvée from any other. The conclusion of the Lot C-91 on the palate displays incredible complexity and harmony, and those who can afford to be patient will be rewarded for decades to come.
