This wine is an outstanding value.  It boasts plenty of the classic sour cherry that leans towards red more than dark, giving the wine a bright medium plus body.  There are hints of leather and spice that give balance to the fruit.  The savory components make this wine and excellent accompaniment to many foods, which is a hallmark of Chianti and Italian Wines in general.

The humble Chianti Classico Riserva often lives in the shadow of it's big brother Brunello di Montalcino.  There are a number of things that set these wines apart.  But for simplicity, here are a couple.  First, the aging requirement of a Brunello is 3 years, with Chianti Classico Riserva at 2 years, and Gran Selezione at 2 1/2 years.  The extra time before release drives the cost of producing the wine upward.  Also, a Brunello is clearly a more powerful wine on the palate.  A Chianti Classico is a rounder, more feminine expression of Sangiovese.

When it comes to Rosso di Montalcino, my recommendation it this - Spend more on a Chianti Classico Riserva and skip the Rosso.  You will almost always get a better bang for your $$.

I have included a few of my favorite Chianti Classico Riservas here.  These are go-to wines for me.  I hope you take a chance and find something you like.
