The 2021 vintage in Burgundy proved quite difficult. In difficult vintages, conscientious producers will de-classified fruit that doesn't meet their standards rather than make appellation labeled wines that didn't reach their standards. These vintages provide opportunities for the savvy oenophile to score some excellent values. Considering the fact that the wine is mostly de-classified Volnay fruit, this is an opportunity, a savvy oenophile to score an excellent value.
The wine is clearly labeled as Pinot Noir to make clear that no Gamay is blended in (which is legal and often done by négociants).
This wine has a lovely nose of crisp red fruit and sandalwood. Mid-weight on the palate, the tannins are present, refined, and provide a perfect amount of structure. This is a classically styled Burgundy that you can have at about 60% the cost of an appellation-named Volnay with the same fruit.
Pair with delicate charcuterie, cheese, and roasted or grilled meats.
