This wine is an old favorite that I haven't revisited in quite a while. It saddened me to watch the price of this wine rise steadily during the "golden age" of Australian wine. When is the last time you've seen a bottle of Yellowtail???

While the Penfolds Group destroyed their brand by releasing a bevy of grocery store $10 wines (think Thomas Hyland) under the Penfolds label, they still make The Grange that sells for upwards of $750, and the mid-level wines are still very good.

The 2019/2020 Penfolds BIN 389 Excels well beyone the point of being very good as is evidenced by the 95 point score awarded by Decanter Magazine and 94 points by Wine Enthusiast.

With its seamless textural slide across the palate, this is a superb example of what is considered a distinctly Australian blend, showing both generosity and serious intent. A magnificent full nose leads to a lively dance of red plums over blue and black fruits, although the strong acid spine results in a rather sharp finish. Time in the cellar will reveal more integrated harmony between the essential elements. Drinking Window 2021 - 2045.

Rich, succulent flavors of wild berry are ripe and plush, but there's terrific restraint here as well, with cedary tannins and an element of palo santo, along with tobacco, dried herb and green tea notes that are firm on the finish, as more grace notes reveal themselves.
