Description

This wine was a great surprise to me.  Had I not known this wine was from Western Australia before I tasted it, I would have certainly mistaken it for a Chateauneuf du Pape or Gigondas. In the glass, the first aromas were savoury notes of dark red fruits intermingled with a leathery perfume.  The balance of earth and fruit is quite unexpected in a wine from Australia.  But this wine is from Western Australia, which is 4.5 hour flight from Sydney.  The climate much milder than the more-traveled South and Eastern side of the continent. In the hottest month, which is February, the average high is 77 degrees.  The cool climate is evident in the expression of this wine, that seem far more French and not the least bit Celtic as the name suggests.

Mostly Grenache with a bit of another grape (probably Syrah, but not genetically confirmed) The fruit is sourced from a .75 hectare plot from bush vines planted in 1910.

94 points Erin Larkin (Wine Advocate): "The 2021 Tir na N'og Old Vine Grenache is dark, spicy and brooding on the nose, with layers of Christmas spice, black and red berries and the earthy base of licorice and iodine. In the mouth, the wine silky, dark and statuesque. The tannins are very finely countersunk into the fruit; they are chalky and gently grippy and shape the fruit in the mouth. With very good length of flavor through the finish, this is built to last some time. Very smart. Drink: 2022-2032.
