Description
The Central Coast of California is where you go if you want to find wines that don't fall in line with the crowd. You will find Rhone Rangers, Cool Climate Bordeaux-styled reds, and some of my favorite examples of California Pinot Noir. So, while I was surprised that the wine was from California, it's not surprising that a wine like this, being from California, would come from the Central Coast. It is a blend of Bordeaux varietals. But the proportions are unusual. The blend is around 30% each of Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. Cabernet Franc fills the remaining 10%. While the large proportion of Petit Verdot is seldom seen, the 13.4 ABV is unheard of in wine from California.
With 10 years of age, the 2015 Bernardus Marinus is a fantastic example of how a California wine could be right at home in a lineup of Bordeaux.
