Description

Saint Laurent, pronounced ZONKT-LOW (Like Cow) RENT. (Avoid the French pronunciation. In Austria this pronunciation is verboten.) This rosé is a delicious example of a richly endowed rosé from an unexpected place.  It won't replace the quintessential rosé of Provence.  But it certainly deserves several spots in your wine fridge.

Saint Laurent - The variety comes from a natural Burgundy seedling. The name
Lorenzy or Laurentiustraube refers to St. Lawrence’s Day on August 10, when the
grapes typically changed color and reached eating ripeness. Saint Laurent reached
Alsace and Germany in the 19 th century. The main area under cultivation (just un
der 1000 ha) is spread primarily around the Lake Neusiedl in Austria, the Pfalz and
Rheinhessen in Germany

The timbered home that houses this family-owned estate in Hainfeld was built in 1619, but the estate in its current form is far more recent than that. In 1990 Annette Borell and Thomas Diehl married and created Borell-Diehl by joining their families’ three wineries into one. Starting with a total of 5 hectares, they have since expanded to 35 hectares of vineyards, all within 5km of Hainfeld, about 1/2 hour drive from Deidesheim. Their holdings are a complex geology of loess, limestone, red sandstone, with deposits of minerally limestone in some sites
