Description
The El Pacto Ojo Gallo is an atypical blend of red and white grapes. This wine reminisces of the historic "farm wines" of Rioja. The blend is primarily Garnacha and Viura, but also includes a field blend of Tempranillo, Malvasia, Graciano, Mazuelo, and (I love this) "some unknown varietal".
Despite being an aged wine, Ojo de Gallo retains plenty of freshness. The influence of Garnacha is most noticeable with notes of red fruits, strawberry yogurt and a touch of balsamic. The white grapes give rise to floral and citrus notes, which forms an unfamiliar yet pleasing combination of aromatic components. The oak component is present, but delicately applied. This delicious medium-bodied wine is fresh and focused on the palate with a pleasant toasty finish.
vineyards
Four plots, three of them centenary and a fourth planted in 1957 (Los Cabos), in the heart of Alto Najerilla, at 600 meters above sea level. The soils are ferrous clay with a high component of conglomerate rock at the bottom.
harvest
It was harvested in the second half of September.
aging
12 months of aging. Half of the wine is aged in a 5,000-liter oak vat and the other half in a small concrete tank.
