Description
Soave Classico Original Vintage Edition by Bertani wines is a historic white wine that pays homage to the bottle served at the coronation banquet of King George VI on May 12, 1937.
This wine is 100% Garganega from vineyards on the western slope of the Soave hill, north of the castle (the historic heart of the Classico zone) on volcanic-limestone soils. Traditional pergola system with vines averaging 30 to 40 years old. Harvesting is done in two passes. About 40% of the grapes are picked in September and kept cold; the remaining grapes are harvested in the first ten days of October. The October-harvested grapes undergo skin maceration on the cold must for 3 to 4 days, a modern interpretation of a 1930s winemaking technique meant to enhance freshness and structure. The wine is aged for 9 months in concrete vats, followed by 6 months of bottle maturation. Concrete is used to preserve natural fruit freshness and let the volcanic terroir express itself.
Intense straw-yellow color with golden nuances with ripe fruit aromas of peach, pear, and apricot, supported by delicate floral and citrus hints. The palate is plush, caressing with a well-rounded texture, balanced by a savory, stony mineral finish and good length.
James Suckling (91 Points): Reviewing the 2023 vintage, Suckling called it "intense and very aromatic for a Soave," highlighting a complex nose featuring hints of apricot, salted lemon, and a chalky, flinty minerality. He noted its medium body, silky texture, and a long, crisp acidity drive. For other recent vintages like the 2021, he praised it as "clean and crisp" with distinct bitter-lemon and almondy mineral notes.
