Description

A vine once thought to be a cross between the two most important red grape varieties in Piedmont: Barbera and Nebbiolo.  It was later proven that Albarossa is a cross between Barbera and Chatus, an old French varietal from Ardeche.

Albarossa wines are deeply colored and often nearly opaque. Aromas of black cherry, blackberry, plum, violet, licorice, and spice and wild or herbal edge are the hallmarks of the Albarossa grape.  The palate is full-bodied with firm tannins, elevated acidity, and naturally high alcohol, often reaching 14–15%. The variety takes well to barrique and tonneau aging and can show good longevity, often aging 10–20 years.
